Raku vessels are placed in an outdoor, propane kiln and heated up rapidly until glowing and glossy with a molten glaze. The vessels are immediately removed from the kiln using long handled tongs and placed in a can of combustible material allowing the fire and smoke to create amazing surface decoration. Then, they are doused in water and scrubbed clean, creating various finishes: crackle glaze, luster effects, smoke stained raw clay, and much more.
The rigors on the clay during the raku firing and reduction process can range from wonderful to brutal. Cracks and breaks are unwanted of course, but can occur without warning. Be prepared for some possible loss.
$125 per person for CURRENT STUDENTS ONLY includes all the ware you can make with 8 lbs of clay. Throw, bisque fire and glaze at your leisure. Skinny and tall shapes are preferred.
